Abstract

Rembang Regency has the fourth highest beef cattle population in Central Java province. Based on data from DINTANPAN of Rembang Regency in 2021, the beef cattle population in Rembang Regency reached 147,494 heads. Farmers and smallholders mostly engage in beef cattle rearing in the Rembang Regency, with two to four heads of cattle in each family. The beef cattle population level and the community's culture of raising livestock in Rembang Regency have become assets to improve the beef cattle breeding sector as a meat producer to support beef self-sufficiency in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the cow performance and the beef cattle population dynamics in the Rembang District. Data was collected from Kragan, Sulang, Sedan, Sarang and Rembang sub-districts. The selection of these locations was based on the level of the beef cattle population in each sub-district in the Rembang Regency. The research materials included 400 farmers and 1,275 cattle from five sub-districts of the Rembang Regency. The research was conducted by interviewing farmers with the help of questionnaires. We used descriptive quantitative methods to analyze farmer characteristics and rearing systems data. The results showed that days open, service per conception, calving interval, reproductive efficiency value, and seedstock reproductive index were 188.63±16.02 days, 2.03±0.29 times, 14.11±0.49 months, 98.83%, and 0.83±0.1 head/year, respectively. Rembang Regency experienced an increase in population, with an average increase of 2.81% per year. Based on these results, it can be seen that many cattle produced were distributed outside the Rembang Regency.
