Potensi kombinasi ekstrak buah bit dan virgin coconut oil dalam disclosing toothpaste

Abstract
Akumulasi plak gigi dapat menyebabkan karies dan penyakit periodontal. Disclosing agent, sediaan yang dapat memvisualisasikan plak gigi, dapat dikombinasikan dengan pasta gigi menjadi disclosing toothpaste. Buah bit (Beta vulgaris) sering digunakan sebagai pewarna alami sedangkan Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) memiliki efek antimikroba. Keduanya berpotensi digunakan sebagai bahan disclosing toothpaste. Penulisan studi literatur bertujuan untuk memberikan kajian mengenai potensi kombinasi ekstrak buah bit dan Virgin Coconut Oil dalam disclosing toothpaste. Literatur yang digunakan sebagai sumber referensi berupa jurnal dan artikel ilmiah yang tersedia di PubMed, Science Direct, dan Google Scholar berdasarkan kata kunci yang telah ditentukan. Berdasarkan studi literatur, ditemukan bahwa buah bit mengandung pigmen betalain yang berfungsi sebagai indikator perubahan pH melalui warna yang ditimbulkannya. Di sisi lain, asam laurat dalam VCO memiliki aksi antibakteri dengan merusak integritas membran sel serta menghambat enzim yang berperan dalam proses metabolisme dan transfer nutrisi sel. Selain itu, VCO mengandung asam kaprat sebagai antifungi yang dapat menghambat adhesi fungi serta menyebabkan kerusakan seluler. Oleh karena itu, kombinasi ekstrak buah bit dan Virgin Coconut Oil sebagai agen antimikroba berpotensi untuk digunakan menjadi bahan disclosing toothpaste.
