Abstract

This research aims to delve deeper into the formation of embodiment to cigarettes within the smoking habits in Paripurno Village, Salaman District, Magelang Regency. Furthermore, this research also highlights how the smoking habit, which has been passed down through generations for years, can play an important role in shaping the social and economic dynamics of the village. This research is a qualitative study with a literature review and interviews with the residents of Paripurno Village. This research uses a phenomenological approach with a descriptive-interpretative method. The research results show that the smoking habit in Paripurno Village cannot be separated from the concept of embodiment in philosophical studies. Cigarettes have become deeply ingrained in the bodies of every individual in this village, both the younger generation and the elders. Cigarettes are not merely viewed as passive objects at a distance, like consumable goods, but also hold profound meanings that encompass axiological, epistemological, and ontological aspects, which have integrated into the daily lives of the village community. This phenomenon shows how cigarettes have transcended their material function and become an integral part of daily life, bringing along stories, experiences, and epistemology that have been passed down through generations. This knowledge shapes the way society understands and interacts with their social environment. The presence of cigarettes in daily life reflects the close relationship between individuals and their bodies, as well as between individuals and their communities and social environments. Relational ontology is evident in the way cigarettes often serve as a tool to assert social status identity within the community and as part of social rituals that strengthen interpersonal relationships. The habit of smoking has integrated itself into the social and cultural structure of the village, creating deep and complex meanings. Ultimately, the habit of smoking in Paripurno Village has become an integral part of daily life, influenced by and influencing axiological values such as religious culture, economy, and socio-cultural aspects. This shows the dynamic interaction between material and non-material aspects in the social and cultural life of the village.
