Abstract

The image of Yogyakarta as a relatively safe area during the Revolution, even for ethnic Chinese, did not mean that Yogyakarta was completely devoid of violence. There was violence in Yogyakarta City (Kota Gede), Bantul Regency, and Sleman Regency (Prambanan). Using literature study and historical research methods, it was found that the two main reasons for the violence were the ambivalence of Chinese political alignment with the Dutch and economic inequality. In addition, the violence influenced the Chinese community's sympathetic view of the Dutch and disappointment with the Republican government.
