Panic-Buying Behavior During The Covid-19 Pandemic in Indonesia: A Social Cognitive Theoretical Model

Abstract

Currently, there are limited studies on the application of the social cognitive theory in social psychology, particularly in explaining and predicting panic-buying behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia.  This study is primarily aimed at acknowledging the role of the social cognitive theory’s development in explaining and predicting the panic-buying behavior of Indonesian citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. The development of the theory is attained by combining emotions and subjective norms to predict the panic-buying behavior intention in Indonesia. Using a purposive sampling technique, the sample size consists of 350 respondents from various areas, such as Jakarta, Tangerang, and Banten. An online survey was performed as the data collection method. Social desirabilit response (SDR) test was also conducted by this study to guarantee the naturality of the replies from the respondents. Data were then analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with a two-stage approach. The result demonstrated that emotions have the highest impact on the panic-buying behavioral intention. Further, subjective norms, self-efficacy, and social outcome expectancies have the second, third, and fourth highest impacts on panic-buying behavior, respectively. In general, the social cognitive theory model developed in this study can understand, explain, and predict panic-buying behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in Indonesia. Overall, the results of this study may serve as basic information for practitioners and business persons by providing insights regarding the factors that form consumers’ intentions and behavior during the pandemic, relating to their buying decisions.

Shine Pintor Siolemba Patiro, Universitas Terbuka

Siolemba, Shine Pintor is a senior lecturer in the faculty of economics, Open University. He also currently served as the Director of Magister Management at the same university. He earned his Master of Management from the Faculty of Economics, Padjadjaran University in 2007. Later, he earned his Doctoral degree in management studies from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University in 2016. His research interests are on marketing behavior, human resource, and organization studies. He has several publications in some reputable national and international journals. He’s also a writer for some books in management studies that were published nationally

Hety Budiyanti, Universitas Negeri Makassar

Budiyanti, Hety is a senior lecturer at the management department, faculty of economics, State University of Makassar. She earned her bachelor of economics, and Master of Accounting from the University of Indonesia in 2003 and 2006, respectively. Later, she earned her Doctoral degree in management studies from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University in 2017. Her research interests are behavioral finance, corporate finance, human resource, and behavioral studies. She has several publications in some reputable national and international journals.

Kresno Agus Hendarto, Kementrian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan

Hendarto, Kresno Agus, graduated from Faculty of Forrestry (Bachelor degree on Field Forrest Management), Master of Management in Finance, and Doctoral Degree in Management Studies from Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University in 2015. He’s currently serves as civil servant at Balai Litbang Teknologi Pembenihan Tanaman Hutan, Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia. His research interests is on behavioral marketing

Hendrian, is a senior lecturer at Accounting department, faculty of Economics, Open University. He earned his Bachelor degree from the Faculty of Economics, Pasundan University in 1994. Later, he earned his Master of Science and Doctoral degree in Accounting studies from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University in 2007 and 2020 respectively.
