Abstract
The pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis is influenced by host inflammatory response through excessive secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. This encourages the development of adjunctive therapy to SRP to modify host inflammatory response. Aloe vera is a substance used as an adjunct to SRP because it possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and healing effects. The
aim of this study is to describe the effect of Aloe vera gel as an adjunctive therapy to SRP to periodontal healing in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.
The subjects of this research were chronic periodontitis patients with periodontal pocket depth of 3-5 mm. The subjects were divided into 2 groups: test and control groups. There were 20 subjects in each group. The subjects in test group were treated by SRP and Aloe vera gel application while in control group the subjects were treated by SRP alone. Bleeding on probing, PD, and CAL data were retrieved on day 0, day 30, and day 90. Data was then analyzed using Chi-Square, Kruskal Wallis, and Wilcoxon tests with 95 % significance. Chi-Square test results showed no difference in BOP between test group and control group (p>0,05). Wilcoxon and Kruskal Wallis test results showed a decrease of PD in both groups with a significant difference between test group and control group (p<0,05). The conclusion of this study was the application of Aloe vera gel as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planing didn’t cause the number of pockets with positive BOP decrease but caused PD and CAL decrease.
