Abstract
Resorption of the bone consistently ensue the use of denture. Hence, the need for denture relining. Thermoplastic nylon as denture’s base material has more fl exibility than acrylic resin but lacks adhesiveness to the self cured acrylic resin. A surface treatment is necessary to strengthen the shear bond of self cured acrylic resin to thermoplastic nylon. The research was aimed at perceiving the impact of surface treatment on the shear bond strength of self cured acrylic resin, as the relining material of thermoplastic nylon denture.
The experimental laboratory research consisted of subject 50 cylinder self cured acrylic resin with a diameter of 5mm and height 3mm bonded to the thermoplastic nylon plate (20x20x2)mm.
The treatment was tested on 5 different classifi cations of acetic acid, sandblasting, silane, combination of acetic acid and silane, and combination of sandblasting and silane, added to the surface treatment. The acquired data were analyzed by one way anova and LSD post hoc.
The result indicated that the surface treatment had impacts on the shear bond strength of thermoplastic nylon relined with self cured acrylic resin (p<0.05). The post hoc test with LSD showed that the combination of sandblasting and silane demonstrated greater shear bond strength compared to the other four classifi cation. Conclusion: surface treatment were able to increase the shear bond strength of thermoplastic nylon that relined with self cured acrylic resin. The sandblasting - silane combination showed the highest shear bond strength.
