Abstract

Hard tissue changes involving the lower third of the face affect the soft tissue cover. Movement of the anterior teeth influence the lip’s shape which are in direct contact with it.This study was conducted to determine upper and lower lip changes after orthodontic treatment of Angle mallocclusion class I bimaxillary dental protrusion  with Begg technique in adult Javanese.
The sample consisted of pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms of 17 patients exhibiting bimaxillary  protrusion. The changes of anterior tooth position (measured as the horizontal distance from the incisal tip to a constructed vertical to sella) were correlated with changes in upper and lower lip ( measured as thickness and length of the lips) with the Pearsons correlation method.
The thickness and length of the upper and lower lips compared. Thickness of the upper and lower lip was increased significantly (p<0,01). The upper and lower lip was lengthen and these changes was also significant (p<0,01).
Anterior teeth retraction on bimaxillary protrusion orthodontic treatment  will be followed by the increase of length and the thickness of upper and lower lip.
