Abstract

The objective of the research is to improve the quality of clove leaf oil produced by farmer from Kulon Progo district. The experiments were conducted into two stages, firstable was bleaching treatment using bentonite as adsorbent and secondly redistillation of the oil after it was treated on optimum condition of the bleaching process, at 93°C and 140 mm Hg.

The results of the experiments indicated that bleaching process with bentonite could increase eugenol content of the oil but the rendemen was decreased. The ratio of bentonite-oil would affect on both of rendemen and eugenol content. As the increassing of concentration of bentonite the refined and eugenol content of oil were decreased. The length of time introduced into bleaching process decreased on the yield of refined oil and also decreasing in eugenol content.

Optimum process experiment based on maximum rendemen of the oil produced and eugenol content using varied concentration of bentonite and length of time for deeping of the adsorbent resulted the stationer point at  11,3% (w/w) bentonite and 64 minutes and 10,5% (w/w) bentonite and  60 minutes respectively, for yield. Predicted of  eugenol content at stationer point is 79,1%. and rendemen 85,5%.

Bleaching treatment using condition at optimum zone base on evaluation by response surface method (RSM), i.e. 10,9% (w/w) konsentrasi bentonite and 62 minutes deeping of the adsorbent resulted 86,66% rendemen and 81,9% eugenol content. Redistilation of crude oil at 93°C and 140 mm Hg was not effective to decrease the impurities of the oil.
