Abstract


Ketika proses transisi menuju demokrasi mulai dilakukan di Indonesia pada tahun 1998, masyarakat dunia sangat berharap adanya success story (cerita tentang keberhasilan) suatu negara dengan populasi Muslim terbesar di dunia ternyata mampu melakukan proses demokratisasi. Dan ketika sejumlah partai politik berazaskan Islam bersedia ikut bersaing dalam proses pemilihan para wakil rakyat dan pemimpin negara, maka para pakar politik dunia mulai berpikir optimis bahwa Islam temyata compatible (dapat beradaptasi dengan baik) dengan demokrasi. Optimisme semacam ini sekaligus mematahkan pandangan sementara pakar bahwa Islam sesungguhnya tidak bisa berdampingan dengan demokrasi.
