Abstract

Fixed orthodontic devices have complicated shapes that facilitate attachment of older plaques and debris around the bracket, making it difficult to clean the teeth, and could increased the risk of caries, gingivitis, halitosis and periodontal disease.
The most simple, safe and effective way to used plaque control was by brushing. This study aimed to determined differences in the effectiveness of tooth brushing technique with Scrubb technique, Roll technique and Bass technique in patients with fixed orthodontic appliance on a gas VSCs (volatile sulfur compounds) in the mouth caused by halitosis.
Thirtieth fixed orthodontic patients from Clinic Orthodontia of Hospital  Prof.Soedomo Faculty of Dentistry Gadjah Mada University were used as subjects on this study. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: group toothbrushing with Scrubb technique, Roll technique, and Bass technique. VSCs was measured from each group by using oral chroma. Each group then was instructed brush the teeth for one week, after one week the VSCs was measured again. Data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and Kruskall Walis.
Results showed there was no significant difference between the Scrubb technique, Roll technique, and Bass technique (p> 0.05). It was concluded that brushing  with Scrubb technique, Roll technique, and Bass technique were equally effective in
lowering gas VSCs oral in patients with fixed orthodontic appliance.
