Abstract

Novamin is an active ingredient in toothpaste which will react when exposed to saliva and forming hydroxycarbonate apatite layer on the tooth surface. This layer is firmly attached to the tooth surface, not easily damaged by brushing activity, and provides protection for the teeth from acid challenge. The purpose of this research
was to figure out the effect of Novamin’s application on the shear bond strength of orthodontic bracket.
This study was an experimental laboratory research. The research was conducted on 20 premolars, equally divided into two groups which were TN (without Novamin) and N (with Novamin). Toothpaste with and without Novamin content were brushed on each tooth in a circular motion for 2 minutes, and then the teeth immersed in
artificial saliva pH 7. Brushing activity was done only once a day for 5 days, orthodontic brackets were placed on each tooth on day 6, and 24 hours later the shear bond strength was measured by universal testing machine. ARI (adhesive remnant index) test was performed using MakroX microscope with 9x magnification. Data collections were analyzed by t-test and Kolmogorov-smirnov test.
The result showed a difference of shear bond strength between two groups. The mean of shear bond strength for group N (with Novamin) was 6,46 MPa and for group TN (without Novamin) was 7,73 MPa. ARI test was used to define the site of bond failure. ARI values of both groups showed a difference for site of bond failure. The conclusion of this study are application of Novamin decreases shear bond strength of orthodontic bracket and bond failure mostly occurs between enamel and adhesive materials after the application of toothpaste containing Novamin
