Abstract


Chromium content in the alloy is one determinant of the quality of the bracket because it can increase the resistance to corrosion of stainless steel bracket . Chromium is added to the alloy to improve protection capabilities by forming a passive layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the alloy. The oral cavity is an environment that is corrosive to metals that are in it. This will affect the stability of the metal ions in the bracket , metal ions will be much regardless of salivary acidic conditions (pH 5). The use of thermal methods are burned in the bracket recycling would affect the microstructure bracket itself because chromium carbide precipitate will be formed as a result of the heating process resulting in the release of ions will initiate the process of weakening the structure of the bracket . to corrosion is a major reduction in the total amount of chromium ion content in stainless steel orthodontic bracket that is immersed in artificial saliva. The purpose of this study was to determine the major differences in the level of corrosion resistance 4 kinds new and recycling stainless steel bracket that is recycled by burning, in artificial saliva with a pH of 5.
This study uses 240 stainless steel bracket slot 0.022 “ from 4 different brands, consists of 30 new bracket bracket as a group and as a group bracket 30 bracket recycling for any brand . Samples were immersed in artificial saliva pH 5 and put in an incubator at 37° for 21 days. The corrosion resistance of chromium ions is calculated through the release of each sample was measured using AAS. Statistical analysis using ANOVA 1 followed by multiple comparison.
The results showed that there were significant differences ( p < 0.05 ) on the corrosion resistance of stainless steel bracket 4 kinds of new and recycled immersed in artificial saliva pH 5. There was an interaction effect of different brands of the bracket against the corrosion resistance (p<0.05).
