Abstract

Denture base material are expected to withstand in the oral environment due to their interaction with acidity and alkalinity from exogenous substances during  mastication. The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of saliva pH level to the modulus elasticity of thermoplastic nylon and polycarbonate as denture base material. The experimental laboratory research were used the subject of 80 plates of thermoplastic nylon and polycarbonate with dimension of 64x10x 2.5 mm. The treatment  were divided into 8 groups, each group consisted of 10 plates which were immersed in saliva with pH level 4; 6; 8, and sterilized aquades as a control group for 14 days stored in incubator with temperature of 37°C. The modulus elasticity measurements were done by the universal testing
machine. The data were analyzed statistically by two way Anova and LSD. The result of the research by two way Anova showed that the saliva pH level significantly influence toward the modulus elasticity of thermoplastic nylon and polycarbonate (p<0.05). LSD test showed the significant difference in thermoplastic nylon group immersed in saliva pH 4, pH 6(p<0.05), and significance difference in polycarbonate group immersed in pH 4 (p<0.05). In summary, the saliva pH level influenced toward the modulus elasticity of thermoplastic nylon and polycarbonate. The decreasing saliva pH level would increase the modulus elasticity thermoplastic nylon and polycarbonate.
