Abstract

The effectiveness of EDTA as root canal irrigant might depend on concentration and application time. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences of EDTA in terms of concentrations (15% and 17%) and application times (1 minute and 3 minutes) on push-out bond strength of root canal filling using gutta percha and epoxy resin based sealer against root canal wall.

This study used 28 mandibula premolars. The root canals were prepared using rotary files up to file #30/0,09. These specimen were divided randomly into 4 treatments group of 7 teeth each. Group IA was irrigated with 15% EDTA for 1 minute. Group IB was irrigated with 15% EDTA for 3 minutes. Group II A was irrigated with 17% EDTA for 1 minute and Group II B was irrigated with 17% EDTA for 3 minutes. Obturation was carried out using gutta percha and epoxy resin based sealer, and then stored in an incubator for 7 days. Specimens were then horizontally sectioned in apical third with 2 mm thickness. Root sections were tested
with push-out technique, and observed under a stereo microscope (magnification of 40X) to determine the failure type. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA at 95% confidence level (α=0,05).

A two-way ANOVA test revealed that there were no differences in push-out bond strength between concentrations (p>0.05), while a signifficant difference occurred between the application times (p<0.05). Moreover, no interaction occurred between
concentration and application time on push-out bond strength. The failure type was observed predominantly as cohesive and the least for adhesive.

Conclussion: Push out bond strength of root canal filling using EDTA irrigant solution with concentration of 15% was not different with 17%, whereas 3 minutes application time produced higher push-out bond strength than 1 minute.
