Abstract

Osteoarthritis and chronic periodontitis was an inflammatory disease. Osteoarthritis was occure in chronic, progressive and with pain. The chronic periodontitis was an inflammation of the tissues supporting the teeth resulting in a loss of adhesion of
gingival and periodontal ligament damage. Supplements glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate on osteoarthritis could reduce pain and inhibit joint damage. The function of glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate on chronic periodontitis may modulate the host inflammatory response, regulate gene expression and decreased inflammatory mediators. This study aimed to determine the effect of supplement use glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate by oral in patients with osteoarthritis after scaling and root planing (SRP) with parameters of gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP) and pocket depth (PD).

Subject study of 20 patients with osteoarthritis who experienced chronic periodontitis, divided into two groups, namely; SRP plus supplements glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate and SRP alone. Data retrieval GI, BOP and PD performed on days 0, 21st and 30th. Data were analyzed using t-test, Mann-Whitney and chi square test.

Results of t-test and Mann-Whitney test showed a decrease in GI and PD in both groups, there were significant differences between the treatment group and the control group (p <0.05), whereas the chi square test against the decline of BOP, the result was not a significant difference between the treatment group and the control group. The conclusion of this study was the used of supplements glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate by oral in osteoarthritis patients who experience chronic periodontitis after SRP could decreas GI and PD, but does not apply to decreased BOP.
