Abstract


Anchovy is a common fish in Indonesia, it contains 15.7–38.3 ppmF, but the possibility to use it for topical fluoride
application has not established yet.Objective: to analyze enamel apatite dimension and solubility changes after
anchovy application Methods: 10 apatite crystal slabs were obtained using “wet-reaction” method. 5g of
anchovy powderwere diluted in 100ml deionized distilled-water to obtain the solution and adjusted to 7.0-5.5 pH
level. 8 slabs were immersed in 4 different pH level solutions, and left 2 slabs untreated. Solubility test were
performed by slab immersion in 10%phosphoric-acid.XRDmethodwas used to analyze crystal dimension, and
ISEmethod used for solubilitymeasurements. Results: The a and c axes length of the control specimens were
9.4207±0.002 and 6.8683±0.01Å,whilst 9.3899±0.015 and6.8898±0.002Å for pH5.5 specimens.Control specimen
solubility was 82.7±1.6 and 53.3±0.8 ppmCa for the pH 5.5 specimens. Statistical analysis showed there
were significant reductions on a-axes and c-axes increase among groups following pH reduction. There was
significant solubility difference between control compare to pH 5.5 group. Pearson test showed significant
correlation between a-axes reduction with apatite solubility. Conclusions: application using anchovy solutions
in various pH level caused apatite a-axis reduction.
