Abstract

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Canine Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (CME), which attacks dogs, causes animals to experience blood parasites and damage several organs. A dog patient was diagnosed with CME in Blitar and could not be saved. Therefore, we aimed to identify organ damage due to CME through histopathological examination.

Material and Methods: one dog in Blitar district that died due to CME immediately underwent a necropsy. Organ samples are preserved and tissue processed for anatomical pathology examination. Detection of Ehrlichia canis is carried out using rapid tests and PCR. Blood and serum samples were examined using an automatic hematology and chemical analyzer.

Results: Histopological examination of the kidneys showed mild autolysis in the renal cortex and medulla areas. There are inflammatory cells dominated by mononuclear cells, especially macrophages, in the area around blood vessels and the base of the glomerulus. The histopathological picture of the spleen shows an increase in the diameter of the area of lymphoid follicles with heterogeneous sizes. Histopathological examination of the liver showed perivasculitis and dilated sinusoids. Hematology and blood chemistry examination showed that the animal had pancytopenia, non-regenerative anemia, and azotemia.

Conclusion: Based on histopathological and clinical pathology examinations, the animal died due to organ damage, namely chronic interstital nephritis which caused the animal to experience stage four chronic kidney failure.

Key words: Ehrlichia canis, histopathology, kidney failure
