Abstract

Sleep disturbances prevalence on elementary school aged children has increased affecting academic achievement. Research on this topic are still rare in Indonesia. This study aims to know the effect of sleep disorders on mean tes kendali mutu (TKM) category in elementary school students in Sleman.

This study design was cross-sectional. Subject of this study was elementary school student in Sleman that was randomly selected and met the criteria for inclusion or exclusion. Sleep disorder was determined by the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) that had been validated in bahasa Indonesia. The dependent variable was the category of TKM mean value based on class level of research subjects. Bivariate statistical analysis was performed using chi-square test.

The number of research subjects were 105 people aged 7-11 years with 52 (49.5%) had a low mean value of TKM and 53 (50.5%) had a high mean value of TKM. Statistical analysis found no significant difference in the proportion of the average number of sleep disorders in mean value of TKM (p =0.604, RP =1.273). While a significant difference was found between the proportion of variable levels of intelligence, gender, learning motivation, extracurricular participation, and history of behavioral symptoms with the category of TKM mean value.

Elementary school students in Sleman who had sleep disturbances was found to have lower mean value of the TKM though not statistically significant. Factors which may modify the mean value of TKM was the level of intelligence, learning motivation, and history of behavior problems.
