Abstract


Background: Acute respiratory infection (ARI), particularly pneumonia  is the main leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children under 5 years old. in the world. Educational program is one of strategy to decrease ARI incidence by improving mother’s knowledge about prevention of pneumonia.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of educational program through group discussion method on mother’s knowledge, attitude, and behavior in pneumonia  prevention.

Method: This study used a quantitative method with a quasi experimental design using pretest-posttest non equivalent control group design . The study conducted at posyandu Gagan and Sawahan Lor, Ngemplak Boyolali  involving 82 mothers and children under five year. The samples were divided into intervention group and control group. The intervention group was given health education about pneumonia using booklet followed by  group discussion, while the control group was given booklet about pneumonia without group discussion. The samples  were selected through consequtive sampling technique. Data analysis was using the t test and Wilcoxon signed rank test.

Results: Statistic analysis showed a significant increases on mothers knowledge and prevention behavior regarding pneumonia  in control and intervention groups. Health education  a significant difference in the average attitude (pvalue: 0.00) and behavior (pvalue: 0.04) between the control and intervention group, but there is no significant difference in knowledge (pvalue : 0.5745). Respondents experienced some difficulties in  behavioral changes related to assertive behavior in reduce smoking behavior at home, burning trash, and avoiding contact with other ill children.

Conclusion: Providing education through group discussion methods had a positive impact on improving maternal knowledge, attitudes, and prevention behaviors regarding  pneumonia. Booklet performed effectivenes as  educational media in preventing the incidence of pneumonia.
