AbstractThis study is a summary of reading celebration in effort to identify novel Durga Umayi written by YBMangunwijaya, published in 1991. The approach used ‘reading’ of’ deconstruction. Study focuses on the puppet whichis the dominant discourse in the novel that was published in 1991. The goal of the study is finding the events behindthe ‘text’ puppet in the novel. Apparently there are so many demolition on puppet construction are well established, and proved by the number of ‘trace’ the text read back with no single perspective, contradictory figure, blurring the factfiction, as well as the reversal of values and other binary opposition. The blurring and inversion conception of binaryopposition in this novel is formulated as experimental element that causes ‘decentering’ (center spread). Keywords: puppet, deconstruction, novel

h: 0px; "> AbstractThis paper attempts to discuss the return of the most important aspects of poetry Subagio Sastrowardoyo. Atfirst he tried to sit Subagio in modern Indonesian literature map by comparing with predecessor and fellow poet ofhis generation. In this comparison, its difference and important characteristics are found, especially their contributionto today‘s Indonesian that is by reintroducing “poetic essays” (essay poem/essayistic poetry) which had already beengrowing in the treasures of foreign literature. In Subagio‘s type, poetry is seen as an attempt to think the endless, whichfurther underline abstract rather than the sensory which is prosaic rather than poetic. As prosaic poem, Subagio seemsnot merely retelling certain treasures, such as puppetry mythology, but the subversion of the origin story. In other parts,Subagio‘s poetry also shows his character as a strong symbolic poetry and also trying to reformulate the poems in thepoetry (Ars Poetica) as a way to present poetry and irony in his chosen style of writing poems. Keywords: Subagio, essayistic poetry, prose writer, subversion

troke-width: 0px; "> AbstractSubagio Sastrowardoyo produces good structural analysis in a number of literary studies. One is the studyof Sitor Situmorang‘S poetry Sosok Pribadi dalam Sajak. The essay is submitted by Teeuw “as an example andvery precise topic” about endeavor of searching the hidden meanings in unanimity and elusive of modern poetry. InSitumorang‘s poetry , the focus discussion of Sastrowardoyo about literature and culture is based on a reading SosokPribadi dalam Sajak (SPdS), Sastra Hindia Belanda dan Kita, SHBdK dan Bakat Alam dan Intelektualisme.Overall, the SPDs are written which prioritizes the interpretation of the inner world , psychiatric or “private figure”author as depicted on the content of his work. Content, strong romantic and modernist understanding that puts the artistat the center of artistic creation, has encouraged Sastrowardoyo to blur quality of assessment and work of the authorpersonally, and to blur the distinction between art criticism and morality criticism, and the issue of aesthetics and ethicsmatters. Sharpness, accuracy, and diligence analysis are often dimmed by passion on doing “holy inquisition” against theauthor. In SHBdK, Sastrowardoyo shifts away from expressive to structural approach, though he never lost interest inthe “private figure” of the author. Keywords: meta-critic , Subagio, SPDs, aesthetics, ethics

Comparative literature study by Claudio Guillen has basic reason namely Weltliteratur. Guillen did criticism upon it to formulate his own method on comparative literature research. Goethe has inspired him to create the basic assumsion of his theory; the one and the many and the universal and the local as well, upon which the internationality by socio-historical perspectives is conducted to identify the diachronic structure. It will reveal the supranationality within the primary data being compared. A researcher will stand on 5 principles, one of which is thematology where a principle motif of a theme lies as a means of dialog in internationality. Keywords: comparative literature, internationality, diachronic structure, supranationality

This paper discussed about the construction of space in The God of Small Things novel by Arundhati Royusing post-colonial space theory by Sara Upstone to find out the representation of the West and the East inside andand outside the domestic space including the post-colonial strategy used. It was because The God of Small Things seemedto talk about the condition of the dualistic post-colonial Indian society. Then, India itself is one of the dualistic postcolonial societies which means that it still holds its own traditions and runs the culture left by the colonial. Both colonialand Indian culture had their own rules with their borders that controlled people’s life but they were repressive to the society. The result of this analysis proved that in the context of domestic space and its surroundings, The God of Small Thingsshowed the representation of the West and the East that caused transgression and chaos. The chaos led to post-spaceoutside the home. Once, the novel showed that the post-space could also be done inside the home. Thus, the novel wasdeconstructing the construction, including the construction of post-colonial itself. It happened since the problem began indualistic conditions of post-colonial Indian. Keywords: colonial, post-colonial, chaos, post-space.

e-width: 0px; "> For the duration of the New Order era (1966–98), the position of Chinese Indonesians was considereda problematic question: they were not “Pribumi” (native), but also not entirely Chinese. This “Chinese Problem”was discussed by a variety of speakers and writers, including several authors of literary works. In Di Kaki BukitCibalak (1977), Ahmad Tohari presents two ethnic Chinese characters, Nyonya Wibawa and Mulyani, the first asthe employer and the second as the lover of the main character, Pambudi. By applying Goldmann’s theory of geneticstructuralism, we show that through his depiction of the physical and behavioural aspects of the characters, Toharipromotes an assimilationist approach as the only possible solution to the Chinese problem (if it can be solved): thedichotomies between ethnic Chinese and Native Indonesians must be erased. However, Tohari continues to differentiatethe ethnic Chinese by positioning them as persons who must only act to support the welfare of the Pribumi. Keywords: “The Chinese Problem”, Ahmad Tohari, position of Chinese Indonesians, Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak

This paper is focused on the alienation which caused by nation in Rilda A.Oe Taneko’s short story entitled “Antara Den Haag dan Delft”. Independent nation which is simply a rewriting of what has been taken away by the colonizer created fixation of space which can not accommodate all interests. This circumstance forced ‘kakek’ (an old man) in the short story to imagine the ideal space outside the nation. However, in the utopia kakek feels alienated. This paper used the Postcolonial theory by Sara Upstone which conceptualize that the independent nation and colonizer do the same act, they just covered the instability in the space of nation. In the attempt to achieve independence, nation used the slogan unity in diversity. The instability led a journey to the utopia city where there is no limitations in place. Kakek in the short story feels alienated in the utopia city because of the cover of instability in the form of his love to the nation that given to him. Anything that is not a part of his nation turned into something strange. Keywords: alienation, utopia, love to the nation.

0px; "> The objectives of this research are to understand the country’s hegemony in the Kompas short stories compilation,Dua Kelamin bagi Midin, and the impacts of country’s hegemony in it. This research uses a dialectic method. Thismethod has been used to analyse six short stories in the short stories compilation through social contextual aspects. This research uses Gramsci’s hegemony theory which emphasizes the importance of idea in social politics control andcritical discourse analysis to analyze text intensively through historical context. Short stories have a unique positionin its corelation to the country’s intervention in literatures. Short stories become a part of mass media or newspaperhegemonied by a country. On that position, short stories have some benefits and they are not hegemonied directly by acountry. Short stories hegemony helps mass media to balance news dealing with some mass media which get pressurefrom country. The six analyzed short stories prove that there is ideological plurality and complexity built in thecharacters relationships in the stories. It shows that there are social criticisms to the country. Keywords: hegemony, short story, Kompas, ideology

The Kanjeng Nabi Verses (Syair Kanjeng Nabi) is a pegon and Arabic lettered verse that tells us the story about Prophet Muhammad when his hair was cut. The same story is also narrated in the Tale of Shaving Prophet (Hikayat Nabi Bercukur) that was written in Jawi. Both texts tell the similar story despite their different geographical backgorund. This study enables the epigone theory as an approach to controvert the idea on act of plagiarism between authors of both texts then to propose the creator‘s creativity in producing texts. Identifications on texts‘ functions and themes methods, and interpretation on cultural perspectives and transcribing tradition are used in this study in order to demonstrate author‘s creativity in producing texts. Keywords: The Kanjeng Nabi Verses, The Tale of Shaving Prophet, Epigone, text function identification, themeidentification, comparative inter pretation

This essay explains about postcolonial space body in the poem Sakramen by Joko Pinurbo. In the Upstonepostcolonial context, body is the subject which being ordered the same with home, journey, nation, and city. Body becomesthe last space in colonialism, as a form of power and ownership implementation in supporting the existed systems. Bodybecomes part of colonial absolute definition target, but there is posibility of redefinition continuance. This researchfinds that body construction is found in Sakramen poem paradoxically presents dialiectic between body and soul whichrevolve in the matter of God as body. This construction in the end becomes self-deconstruction for the author whichontologically refers that body (material) is destroyed in impermanence, while spirit (idea) of Christ as God is idealizedin unity. In the end, this condition directs that the ideal contruction is in the spirit world, while in here, (the empirical, physical) is just irony.Keyword: space, post-colonialism, chaos, altenative body, whole budy, paradox, self-deconstruction, irony.

; "> In the time of war, people usually migrate from troubled places to the safe and sound cities, promising a better life. However, the position of cities as a promising space is questionable. It is due to the close relation between city utopia andcolonial city. In fact, there are indications of colonial continuation through industrialization which ends up to domination inmany aspects; economy, social, and cultural. One of postcolonial novels written by a diaspora writer, Khaled Hosseini, takesup a theme of migration from a city (Kabul) in a troubled country, Afghanistan, to a city (Fremont) in a more stable country,America. Sara Upstone’s method of reading on spatial politics in postcolonial novels is used here to read how Fremont isconstructed in the novel and the spatial respond occurred. The analysis showed that Khaled Hosseini’s construction uponFremont is that utopia is denied from the beginning of the novel. Fremont becomes oppressive space and yet, it offers possibilitiesfor spatial responds such as displacement and carnivalisation to occur. These are strategies used by those who are subjected tooppression in the city space. Keywords: City space, postcolonial, spatial respond.

This paper discussed about the objective and the subjective observations which are used by the writer in representing the world when the writer is traveling. World is not just merely a landscape or places, but there is also people. Through objectivity point of view, the writer is taking distance with the world which is described. On the contrary, subjective observation emphasizes the personal involvement of the writer towards the described world. In this research, we can see in both places and people, subjective observation is more dominant than the objective observation. Observation always sets off from the objective point of view to the subjective point of view. Some places are described objectively, but then it shifted into subjective. Explicit subjective observation is more dominant than the implicit one. However, even if the quantity is lesser, the implicit subjectivity gives more significant influence. Keywords: objective, subjective, travel

As the design and printing technology develops rapidly, the covers’ design of literary books on store develops as well. The covers tell not only title, writer’s name, and publisher, but also show textual symbols such as subtitle, phrases describing title, phrases describing writer, book category, quotes of the content, other writer’s comment, and more. Those additional texts make the cover look full. Gramedia is one of the publishers which keeps putting only title and writer’s name on the book covers without adding up more additional texts mentioned above. Instead, the publisher put the additional texts on the back cover. This article aims at explaining why Gramedia keeps the design of book covers that way. This article applies method of Bourdieu’s theory on literary sociology. The result shows that Gramedia applies a strategy of symbolic capital exchange among the writers whose works published by Gramedia. The symbolic capital exchange is used indirectly to increase the literary books’ sale. Gramedia takes a subtle way of the strategy to keep the symbolic capital of the books and their writers affiliated with the publisher. Gradually the publisher gathers more symbolic capital that consequently increase its economic capital. Keywords: symbol production, Gramedia, literary books’ covers, literary sociology, Bordieu.

In the recent years, there are numerous books containing travel writing, both in Indonesia and abroad, have been published. The books can be a novel, memoir, travelogue, poetry, and short story. One of the novels containing travel writing is Lumbini written by Kris Budiman. It is about Ratna and Niko who travel to Nepal. Told in many points of view, this novel shows its subjectivities. In order to reveal this, the researcher will apply the concept of travel writing by Carl Thompson. Through the analysis, it is found that subject “I” in this novel is not a dependent subject because it, sometimes, is substituated with “we”. Besides, subject “I” also interact with other object. Thus, the subject can be classified as an “romantic self”. According to Thompson, it seemingly more open than Enlightenment self. Keywords: subjectivity, travel writing, romantic subject.

The emergence of literary criticism, as sort of “literary institution” in a modern sense, is relatively a new phenomenon in France as it happened in 19th century and would be more institutionalized in 20th century. It due to the progressive distinction between the author criticism and the critic cricitism as well as to the decline of poetic representation, which has been built on hierarchy of genres and critic’s superiority over authors in 17th century. This article traces the institutionalization of literary criticism and the duality of its practices through the lens of Roland Barthes’ “two criticism”, applied to read the practices of literary criticism in France from 16th century onwards. Keywords: literary criticism, “two criticism”, crisis.

Taking and making positions are conducted by the agents of the journal. This study found that in Jurnal Poetika, academics legitimize the writer and conversely the writer who became the academics legitimize the other writer and even criticize the other academics in their different arena, and it is also possible in the same arena. In the arena of criticism, the exchange of positions continues as long as the existence of the arena, depends on the authorities of the arena, with Faruk as the agent of symbolic power, and even the power is identical to himself. In the arena (criticism) of Indonesian literature especially in the University of Gadjah Mada, Faruk brings the arena (criticism) of Indonesian literature to a new direction with a new angle to bring the literary text towards newer perspective that is identical to the newer view which is a part of the habitus in Indonesian literature. Keywords: Arena, Practice, Positions.

This research underlies the analysis on the performance and performativity of characters in shonen-ai: Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Henshin Dekinai, and Himananode Hajimete Mimashita manga. Characterization in shonen-ai manga is based on the characters’ role within the same-sex relationship, which are the male role (seme) and the female role (uke). The character of Seme tends to be aggressive, protective, smart, good looking, and unemotional. On the other hand, Uke is feminine, smaller, physically weak, insecure, and emotional. The writer would like to analyze whether performance align with performativity based on the characterization of seme and uke. Judith Butler’s Performativity is used as theoretical framework within the research. The theory covers gender, performance, and performativity. Gender as social construction is fluid and unbound to the body. This phenomenon is seen in these three shonen-ai manga. Character that looks masculine does not always have the male role (seme) and the feminine one does not always have the female role (uke). Physical performance is not merely associated with gender (performativity). Keywords: shonen-ai manga, same-sex relationship, performativity, gender.

Magic Realism Prose brings the magic and the reality at once in a narration. Reality and magic have mutual support to build a narration. The support between the reality and the magic is not only manifested in the unity of the narration but also gives the possibility to give the meaning that goes beyond the narration itself. In other words, the meaning also gives the magic realism experience for the readers. This paper will analyze the form of magic realism in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story entitled “Light is Like Water”, Triyanto Triwikromo’s short story entitled “Sayap Kabut Sultan Ngamid”, and A.S. Laksana’s short story entitled “Dongeng Cinta yang Dungu”.Keywords: real, magic, prose, magic realism.

Today, the studies on post-colonial urban space in relation with Indonesian modern prose can be said to be minimal. On the other hand, in the history of Indonesian literature, we are endowed with writers like Armijn Pane, Idrus, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Iwan Simatupang, Budi Darma etc., who consistently write prose with the background of the ex-colonial towns. Unfortunately, there is no enough studies of the encounter between those writers with the city as a representation of a post-colonial experience. This paper tried to track the integral relationship between Indonesian modern prose writers to the city by using the spatial space theory in relation to the study of post-colonial literature in Indonesia. This analysis used the spatial theory by Sara Upstone as the approach, especially regarding to space (spatial) city. Keywords: spatial, city, postcolonial.

This writing discusses one of Colin Johnson or Mudroroo’s novel entitled Doctor Wooreddy’s Prescription for Enduring the Ending of the World to reveal colonial construction of space in Van Diemen’s Land and to analyze postcolonial spatial responses emerged as a form of negotiation toward the contested space. Postcolonial theory of space is applied to discuss the issues. The result of the discussion shows that the White colonial in Van Diemen’s Land constructed their colonial space by arousing chaos and establishing order and borders to create a fixed boundary. The constructed space is proven fail to achieve its goal by arousing some self contradictions which make it lays as merely a utopia. Chaos appears within the order or structure of the space followed by violations trespass the colonial borders to create a new order or structure of a post-space. Post-space within its process will be a new space with new possibilities of chaos, thus, space will be continuously constructed and deconstructed as a form of spatial response of postcolonial space. Keywords: Colonialism, Postcolonial Space, Spatial Response, Aborigines.

This study specifically examines the multiple forms of oppression that is found in the novel Mirah dari Banda by postcolonial feminist perspective. The analysis showed that the novel talk about inferior position of women as a result of the dominance of Dutch and Japanese colonial system and patriarchal domination both colonial and indigenous men. With the two forms of oppression Thus, indigenous women suffer and the lowest level in a colonial situation. Associated with the time of publication, the 1980 novel Mirah dari Banda include nostalgia novel of oppression and the strug gle against colonialism. Thus at the same nostalgic attitude can be regarded as a reflection on the possibility of the presence of the double oppression of women today which synonymous with the era of capitalism (imperialism) and still rooted patriarchal ideology.

This study aims at discussing about the forms of Camp strategies as well as elaborating the purpose of its application in Lady Chablis’ Hiding My Candy. Hiding My Candy tells a story of a transgender name The Doll who fights for her survival among patriarchal community. To answer the objectives of the research, Moe Meyer’s Camp theor y will be applied. In the book of the Politics and Poetics of Camp, Meyer defines Camp as the total body of performative practices and strategies used to enact a queer identity, with enactment defined as the production of social visibility. The emergence of Camp as a survival strategy appears due to the challenge of transgender discrimination resulted by heteronormativity restraint. The study result shows that transgender survival can be divided into three aspects i.e. social visibility, alternative normative and transgender empowerment. Those transgender survival’s aspects can be achieved by applying the Camp strategies. Those strategies include parody Camp strategy, humor Camp strategy, strategy of posing (costume, gesture and speech act) and strategy of life in performance.

This study reveals the ideological strategies the dominant takes to exploit Black enslaved women’s womb experienced by the characters in Toni Morrison’s Beloved as well as their resistance. Written in 1987, the novel is set eight years after the end of the Civil War in time painful experiences during slavery era are still there in the mind of ex-enslaved Black women and men. The novel narrates the past through personal life experiences presented by Sethe and Baby Suggs. During slavery era, their bodies are not merely used to work in the plantation area but since they are women, their wombs are valuable commodity providing advantages and profit to the masters. To make it possible, the dominant function ideological strategies to control the Black enslaved women’s wombs. Therefore, this study tries to explore how the ideological strategies are practiced in the novel. According to Collins, creating negative images such as mammy, breeder woman, and jezebel addresses to the bodies of Black enslaved women belongs to ideological strategy which is more powerful compared to the economic and politic strategy. Each image covers dominant interest to control Black women’s womb under new-progressive capitalism in United States. The result of the study shows that those three images works effectively to control the Black enslaved women, even nowadays, those images are still there in the body of young generation of Black women and provide another form of womb’scontrol. However, the study as well finds out that the resistance toward the oppression is also varied. Self-definition is presumed to be a fundamental element to the journey of internalized oppression to the ‘free mind’ which eventually leads to the action of resistance. With this self-definition, Blackwomen begin to deny the existed negative images controlling their wombs.

This study highlights the myth of beauty in short stories written by Dwi Ratih Ramadhany, which are “Janda Sungai Gayam” and “Perempuan Bisu dan Cermin Ratu”. The perspective utilized in this study is the myth of beauty by Naomi Wolf. The results are: (1) both the short stories illustrate standards of beauty identified by long black hair, long neck, sensual lips, body fragrant, white-toned-smooth-skin, and slim body; (2) in both short stories, the quality of beauty refers to behaviors that could arouse an excitement rather than merely consider physical appearance;(3) regarding beauty not as an intrinsic quality, it is affected by external factors, for instance cosmetic and supernatural powers. Myth of beauty in both short stories stands on the runway of men’s interest and taste, and women’s motive toachieve resources provided by men, which are called loyalty, recognition, praise and charm.

Literary works known as authors’ desire manifestation. In its history, a desire comes from the feeling of the lack of subject. Writing a literary work becomes an effort to hide it. The effort can be seen through an author’s point of view on ego ideal in his works. Novel of Cermin Cinta is chosen as a sample in order to search what and how Nano Riantiarno’s desires are. The aim is to find out the reflecting of Nano’s ego ideal. This study uses Lacanian Psychoanalysis (PL). Metaphor and metonymy will be used through PL in looking deeply the signs of Nano’s desire in Cermin Cinta. This study finds out that a desire of becoming a writer and an artist has guided Nano unconsciously to other symbolic signs, such as being a ‘tough’, ‘consistent’, ‘determined’, ‘diligent’ writer, etc. His effort in setting up a theatre community where he becomes the characters writer and director which was reached from the images of Rendra, Putu Wijaya, Arifin C. Noor, and Teguh Karya becomes his desire about the ontological intactness for his identity. Besides, ‘Freedom’ becomes ‘object a’ of Nano to get jouissance for himself.

This study aims to determine the position of the author in women narration. With Rahimi’s background as a feminist, he said that with his novel he voiced the voices of Afghan women. Rahimi offered a strong female figure in the middle of the patriarchal shackles who is able to fight the system. The problem of this study is Rahimi’s ambiguity in narrating women. To determine the position of the author, the research uses the concept of the lure of the image belongs to Lidia Curti. The lure of the image is an offer provided by the author to give positions to women that are in fact not provided by them. Based on the research conducted, the results show that Rahimi keeps women as objects in a patriarchal world. In this case he is not able to pull the women out of the patriarchal zone. The space given to women by Rahimi reinforces male power. What Rahimi written in this novel is the lure of the image according to Curti’s concept which explains it as an image of women given by author or known as female gaze.

Yann Martel’s Life of Pi tells a story of a survivor boy floating on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger passing Pacific Ocean with the brutal show between animals. He is insisted to tell about more realistic story, thus he tells it contains of similar conflicts with different characters; the animals are changed into humans. Here, it shows two stories in one story which blurs the true story behind it. This is what Baudrillard the process of simulation over simulacra; the reproduced false representation of the true reality. The two stories can be both true and thus, the questions can be problematized are; (1) How is simulation understood in Yann Martel’s Life of Pi? (2) What is the hyper-reality resulted as the impact of simulation represented in Yann Martel’s Life of Pi? The used method is objective approach (textually) and based on the analysis, the two stories are connected to each other, animal story represents human story while human story represents the animal story. The animal story can be seen as the false copy of the true story because it copies the human story, so can human story. This is simulation and this simulation results on the two true stories which are hyper-reality.

This research was aimed to describe how the author’s desire manifested through Akar’s novel. There was a relationship between the story of Akar’s novel, which has a Buddhism background, with Dee’s interest as the author’s toward buddha’s teachings that became an indication about the relation between author’s desire and Akar’s novel. To answer this indication, the writer used Lacan’s Psychoanalysis method through the mechanism of metaphor and metonymy by analyzing a series of signifiers on Akar’s novel, so it will discover what exactly the desire of “being” and “having” of the author.

Cerita Pendek

Kata kunci : femme fatale, perempuan, seksualitasABSTRACTThis study aims to describe the characteristics of femme Fatale contained in the novel Cantik Itu Luka. This research focus on the discourse of Syiah that alleged to Mizan over the first publication of Dialog Sunni-Syiah which published at 1983. Despite of that negative justification, Mizan publisher still exist and productive, especially for producing pop-islamic fiction. By using Pierre Macherey’s literary production theory, spoken and unspoken, then found a ideological islamization project and also an anti-western effort in the other pop-islamic fiction by realizing it through figuration and symbol inside the text; hidayah, islam figure, moslem gathering, ideal by wearing hijab, Arabian’s figure domination, history of islamic resistance, and preferring middle east background. Therefore, unconsciously, pop-islamic fiction reducing the negative image of Mizan as pop-islamic publisher as well as showing the existence of islamic power. Mizan’s presence appears because of the enthusiasm of intellectuals to the islamic ideas books, especially about Islam Iran Revolution at 1979. By the sensitivity of the discourse in Orde Baru era, then Mizan publisher be a part of negative image in islam. By the Mizan’s productivity producing pop books then the more the image faded, simultaneously awaken islamic power in Indonesia’s popular culture. Keywords: Pop-islamic fiction, Mizan Publisher, spoken and unspoken , silences

This paper focuses on issues and discourses about the crisis that existed in the dystopian science fiction (dystopian sf) novels. In this case, Hunger Games Trilogy (2008-2010), Maze Runner Trilogy (2009-2011), Divergent Trilogy (2011-2013) are the main object to see how far the text of dystopian sf novels address issues and discourses about the crisis within. Dystopian sf novels that are the counter-discourse of utopian sf novels has no longer present the utopian elements of the future, but, contrastly present the worst possibilities of the future. It appears that the dystopian sf writers present narratives about crisis, poverty, darkness, and pessimism in their novels. It even reads as a form of criticism and warning that the writers are trying to convey to the reader through fictional texts. In the end, the conditions of crisis seen in the text of these dystopian sf novels open its relationship with the world's history outside the text. Keywords: crisis, dystopian science fiction, America, history.

This study aims to analyze astral projection as a concept of Death and Dying by using a postmodern fiction discourse analysis perspective in Insidious movie script. This study found that astral projection is a capability possessed by a person to leave physical body and explore an astral world or the spirit world. Astral projection is a death and dying concept that is presented as one of the postmodern fictional strategies known as superimposition. This strategy illustrates that there are two worlds that accumulate and co-exist with each other. Its presence is a way of deconstructing thoughts about something that is considered uncanny and unusual as well as a counterpart of totality that puts the ontological side of the existence of something. It is said by McHale (1987) that it is a sister-genre of postmodern fiction. Science fiction explores ontological issues in order to build a good story while postmodern fiction simply presents the problem without having to build a story. Furthermore, both genres can adopt each other's strategies. Meanwhile, postmodern fictional relations and fantasy fiction are the same, borrowing strategies for exploring ontological issues.

The study examined three female characters in Kulisusu folklore, each titled: Perselingkuhan Istri Lakino Lipu; Putri yang Hilang; Lagumba dan Wa Ure-Ure Ngkamagi. Three of them narrated women in prototype uniformity, in a concept that is more fluid than some kindergarten like Bawang Putih Bawang Merah or Cinderella. Fluidity mean that the liberation of women from all forms of subordination: a class polarization that took shape into archetypes dichotomous construction. The characters are identified as women who are not only clever, but also able to make decisions in determining their fate. This study will address two issues: 1) how women were originally seated as "liyan"; 2) how the plot revolves and places women as "self". Both are implicated by using the feminism discourse perspective. The review will help parents sort out stories that address the values of plurality and gender equality principles, and stories that must be abandoned for internalizing the bias in the eyes of the quality.

The re-writing of a fairy tale caters for characters, settings and values that have undergone changes, be it explicit or implicit. In Juliet Marillier’s Wildwood Dancing, the main female character Jena is transformed from the passive and obedient Twelfth/Youngest Princess of Grimm’s The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes into a brave and sensible figure. She challenges the oppression of patriarchal rules by taking control of her household in her father’s absence, securing her four sisters’ welfare, and keeping secret of their nocturnal dancing trips in the Other Kingdom despite being threatened by her domineering male cousin. In this way, Gerard Genette’s Hypertextuality strives to investigate the underlying patterns manifested in both literary works by applying the Re-vision element. Through it, Jena’s and the Twelfth/Youngest Princess’ sensibility trait and the socio-cultural settings surrounding them are highlighted in order to determine the importance of the overall hypertextuality process that takes place between the two. Later, Jena emerges as the more influential heroine than her predecessor character because she does not stop struggling to be regarded as an independent young woman who can always give advice and make decisions for her family affairs sensibly. Also, it is eventually proven that sensibility is indeed a strong weapon to be possessed by women in order to empower themselves against the conventions of a patriarchal world.

This article explores Sartre’s concept of shame and alienation in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis through the portrayal of the protagonist. By focusing on the interpretation of the characteristics of Gregor Samsa through New Criticism approach, this article reveals that shame and alienation may occur when a person realizes that one is judged by others and sees oneself through the eyes of others. This way of looking at one’s identity is problematic because it creates complexity within the existence of the self. Through his fantastical transformation into an insect, Gregor cannot help but seeing himself from his family’s point of view. Instead of fighting for himself, he is made to believe that he deserves to be alienated. From the analysis of the protagonist, it is revealed that his being selfess and dutiful in a way trigger the shame and alienation that result in his submission to death. The Nazi ruling since 1933 made no secret of his dislike of Jews. Adolf Hitler even declared that "rational antisemitism must lead to a system of legal opposition, the ultimate goal of wiping out all Jews" (Mein Kampf, 1925: 27). He also developed the idea that Jews are the evil race that dominates the world. Nazi anti-Semitism is instilled in religious situations and in a political context. Then, the Nazis added a further dimension, racial anti-semitism. With the logic that Jews are not religious but racial communities, the Nazis launched various aggressions in the form of discriminatory, racist, and Holocaust. This dark phenomenon in human history is revealed in Charlotte's novel by David Foenkinos, a French writer who often receives literary awards. The discussion will be conducted by descriptive analysis method through structural approach which includes assessment of character, background, and point of view. Key words : Discrimination, Racism, Holocaust, Charlotte
