Fakultas Ilmu Budaya
Woman Me; Phenomenal Woman; Seven Women’s Blessed Assurance; Sexuality
Maya Angelou’s poems entitled “Woman Me”, “Phenomenal Woman”, and “Seven Women’s Blessed Assurance” present a topic of woman’s captivating and overwhelming sexuality and beauty that draw men toward her. Using the expressive approach, these poems are studied and analyzed to reveal Angelou’s ideas and perspective of women’s sexuality. In contrast to Angelou, the women in her poems are very confident about themselves. They accept their physical traits, proud of the way they look, and manage to make it their strong point, defining themselves as very strong, confident women. Through her poems, Angelou represents the idea of sexuality completely the opposite of what she was like in her younger years.

THE MISERY OF WAR AS SEEN IN STEPHEN CRANE'S WAR IS KINF AND WALT WHITMAN'S DIRGE FOR TWO VETERANS

misery; war; death; irony
This article discusses two poems, a Stephen Crane’s poem entitled War is Kind and a Walt Whitman’s poem entitled Dirge for Two Veterans. These two poems are about the war.
The objectives of the study are to illustrate the misery that is caused by the war and to compare the different way’s of expressing the same theme in these two poems. The approach used in this research is the objective approach. This approach is chosen because the analysis is solely based on the elements found in the poems. This paper uses the library research as the method of research. Then the descriptive method is applied to explain the poems descriptively by interpreting each stanza in the poems.
The result of the research shows that the misery which is caused by war exists and affects so many people. Both Stephen Crane’s War is Kind and Walt Whitman’s Dirge for Two Veterans provide us with images of death and misery that are caused by the war though in a slight different way in expressing the theme. War is Kind highlights the irony of ‘war is kind’ to provoke the sense of dreadfulness. By using this irony, it tries to influence the readers to judge that war is not kind at all. Walt Whitman’s Dirge for Two Veterans also points out death as the consequence of the war. But in this poem, misery is described as something that should be endured though it is haunting and frightening.

Puritan; influence; total depravity; change
This research attempts to investigate the Puritan’s teachings in Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown and the influences of the teachings toward Young Goodman Brown. Formalism was used in this research to analyze the novel. The results of the research show that the Puritan’s teaching of total depravity taught by John Calvin appears in most of the scenes involving Goodman Brown, both explicitly and implicitly. The Puritan’s teaching of total depravity influences Goodman Brown’s thought of people around him. His way of thinking about people around him changed after he returned from the forest. The Puritan’s teaching of total depravity also changes Goodman Brown’s personality indirectly. So, according to the influences of the teachings towards Goodman Brown, they are accepted by Goodman Brown as an invitation to doubt himself and others, to be suspicious of other people’s activities, which eventually leads to an unhappy ending.

This research paper investigates the speech act of disagreement performed by English native speaker students. Particularly, it attempts to examine the politeness strategies used by English native speaker students in realizing disagreement. The data were obtained using Discourse Completion Task consisting of six situations that were completed by twenty students. The results showed that a total of 113 utterances of disagreement were found. The most frequently used strategy was negative politeness (41.6%) since this strategy becomes the most suitable strategy to minimize the imposition of disagreement utterances. The rank is then followed by positive politeness (29.2%), bald on-record (25.7%), and off-record (3.5%).

Donald Trump; impoliteness strategies; political debates; power
This research examines impoliteness strategies in the context of political campaign debates by the presidential candidates, particularly by Donald Trump against other candidates. The data used in this research, taken from the last three National Republican debates, were Donald Trump’s utterances in which he employed impoliteness strategies. The data were analyzed using Garcia-Pastor’s (2008) impoliteness strategies. The results show that Donald Trump employed the negative-face oriented strategies much more frequently (66.15%) than the positive-face oriented strategies (33.85%). The negative-face oriented strategy ‘state the communicative act(s) as common or shared knowledge’ was the most frequently used (30.38%). These results suggest that for the purposes of asserting power in the debates, Donald Trump tends to use negative-faced oriented impoliteness strategies in his political debates.

American Society Viewed from Youths’ Lens: A Study on Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall”

injustice; racism; sociological literature; war
This study examines the lyric of a famous song entitled A Hard Rains a-Gonna Fall composed by American folk musician, Bob Dylan. The objective of this study is to analyze the perspective of the baby-boomer generation, which remarkably differs from that of the older generations in terms of their attitude on certain issues such as war, social injustice, racism and equality in the 1960s America. All of these are reflected in the lyric of the song and also in the sociological and historical facts around the time when the work was created. The approach of sociological literature is employed in this study, which is chosen for the analysis to start from the assumption that the meaning of the lyrics is seen as the reflection of what happens in the society. This is also to reconfirm that a literary work can be used as a means of analyzing a period of time and, therefore, giving insights as to how the general public think about it.

airline advertisement; illocutionary acts; types; patterns; slogans
This research attempts to examine the illocutionary acts used in airline slogans taken from online airlines advertisements and investigate the most dominant illocutionary acts used in the slogans. The data were collected from online advertisements from November 2015 until January 2016. The results of the research show that four types of illocutionary acts are used in the slogans: directives, expressives, commissives and assertives with three patterns of illocutionary acts: Assertives entailing expressives, commissives entailing expressives and directives entailing expressives. Based on the findings, the most dominant type of illocutionary acts used was assertives with 40 occurrences (70%). Claiming is an assertive illocutionary act that was used most frequently in the slogans. This is in line with the main aim of advertising, i.e., persuading people. No declarative illocutionary act was found in the slogans since it is hard to fill the mode of achievement of a declarative in online advertising which changes the hearer’s status.

Criticism against the Gentlemen Image in England’s Victorian Period in R.L. Stevenson’s <i>The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde</i>

criticism; gentlemen; image; moral; victorian
England’s Victorian period is marked as an era of historical, technological, economic, and social change. Although science and technological advancement was very progressive—denoted by the Industrial Revolution which took place in this era—the Victorian society’s ideal of moral values, norms, and beliefs was very conservative. Robert Louis Stevenson, a famous Victorian author, wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde which portrays the complexity of Victorian upper class lives in dealing with the development of science yet facing the strict social norms. This research applies a sociological approach to examine the significant relations between the characterization of the three main characters in the novel—Jekyll, Hyde, and Utterson—and the social issues in the Victorian era. A library research as well as a qualitative method is applied in the process of collecting and analyzing the data. It was found that both Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde symbolize the repressed individuals of Victorian social norms as Jekyll suppresses his inner-self and separates his dual personality apart in the form of Edward Hyde. As the representation of Jekyll’s evil side, Hyde performs violent and criminal acts which oppose the ideal of social morality. It can be concluded that Jekyll-Hyde’s characterization articulates the social criticism against the firm gentlemen image in the Victorian era. In contrast, Utterson’s characterization represents the epitome of Victorian gentleman.

Despite the accolades that it has received, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) has not been thoroughly studied in the academic sphere. This research attempts to examine the hierarchy of expressive culture portrayed in the screenplay of Birdman using Lawrence W. Levine’s theory (1988) of cultural hierarchy. A sociological approach by Swingewood & Laurenson (1972) is applied to see the work’s relation to the society. Firstly there is highbrow/lowbrow categorization, followed by an analysis of the challenges to the hierarchy; each process includes comparison between the findings and the reality in the present-day American society to see their resemblance.

errors; error analysis; grammatical errors; surface strategy taxonomy
This research attempts to identify the grammatical errors produced by students of the English Department of UGM year 2012 in their final paper of the writing class. In particular, it attempts to classify the errors based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). The data used in this research were taken from the submitted assignments of the English Department students of Universitas Gadjah Mada year 2012 in General English, particularly nine students in writing class. We found 178 errors in fourteen linguistic categories which are divided into four parts: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. From all the four parts, we discovered that the most frequent errors found are in the part of misformation (97 errors; 54.49%), followed by omission (38 errors; 31.11%), misordering (22 errors; 12.78%), and addition (20 errors; 11.11%). However, in the linguistic categories, the three most frequent errors found are misformation of verbal (30 errors), misordering of complex sentence (20 errors), and omission of determiner (19 errors).

This research investigates refusal acts and the strategies used in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets movies. It aims to identify what types of refusal acts are used by the characters in the movies and how they are expressed throughout the movies. The data were obtained from the two movies. A total of 91 refusals and 12 adjuncts were found in the movies. The results indicate that indirect refusals were more commonly used (65%) than direct refusals (35%). However, the direct strategy negative willingness/ability is the most commonly used (26%), followed by the indirect strategies Attempt to dissuade interlocutor (21%) and Reason/Explanation (18%). The findings seem to suggest that the characters in the Harry Potter movies tend to express their refusals indirectly, especially through persuasion and explanation.

The Clash of Culture in Neil Gaiman's <i>American Gods</i>

English Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada
conflict; cultural clash; displacement; identity; modernity; tradition
This research aims to examine the portrayal of cultural clash in Neil Gaiman’s novel, American Gods. More specifically, this research aims to identify what cultures are clashing and why they clash, and also to understand how the situation of cultural clash affects the lives and attitudes of the characters. This research also explores how the novel relates to cases of cultural clash happening in the current American society. This research is conducted using the framework of several sociological theories to understand the different forms of effects of cultural clash. The main issue presented in the novel is the conflict between the old gods, who represent society’s traditional beliefs, and the new gods, who represent the shift of culture in modern America. This conflict symbolizes how the two ideals, tradition and modernity, are competing in the American society today. The challenges the old gods face can also be seen as a portrayal of the immigrant experience, where they experience effects of cultural clash also commonly experienced by immigrants: cultural displacement, identity crisis, and conflict. The main finding of this research is that a person or group who experiences cultural clash will face a struggle where they must compromise or negotiate their cultural identity in order to be part of their current community. This is done as a way to survive and thrive in their environment.

This study investigates the sarcastic utterances found in two American movies. The data for the research were dialogues containing sarcastic expressions found in the movies Fantastic Four (2005) and its sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2008). The data were analyzed and categorized according to their forms using Camp’s theory (2011). The sarcastic utterances were also classified according to their functions using Leech’s theory (1983). The results indicate that in terms of form, illocutionary sarcasm (60%) was most frequently used by the characters in the movies, which suggests that the characters in the movies tend to express their sarcasm through illocutions. In terms of function, sarcasm in the movies was more commonly (56%) used for collaborative purposes. The results of the research also suggest that there has to be a clear context in understanding sarcastic expressions, and the interlocutors must share some sufficient common ground in employing sarcasm.

This research examines Lois Lowry’s Number the stars, focusing on the development of Annemarie Johansen’s self-awareness and personality trait from the stage of immaturity into maturity. In line with the topic of research, the formalist approach was used as the main theoretical approach. The library research was used in collecting the data. To point out every crucial stage of Annemarie Johansen’s growing up process, the definition of Bildungsroman proposed by Dilthey (1985) was applied. The results reveal that Annemarie Johansen goes through stages of growing up processes from her immaturity into maturity throughout violent and dangerous times. The results also show that during her self-growth, Annemarie Johansen gradually develops her self-awareness and personal trait of being a courageous girl in order to survive in the harsh reality and she manages to save her good friend, Ellen, from the plan of Nazi persecution of Jews during the German occupation. Finally, she transforms herself from an innocent and frightened girl into a brave girl in a brief period.

This research examines the metaphors used by Adhitia Sofyan in his songs. The data used in this research were Adhitia Sofyan’s song lyrics taken from four different albums: Quiet Down (2009), Forget Your Plans (2010), How to Stop Time (2014), and Silver Painted Radiance (2016). The data were analyzed using the theory of conceptual metaphor proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The results show that the chosen song lyrics contain three kinds of metaphors: structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors. In addition, the messages Adhitia Sofyan wants to convey by using the metaphors are mostly about love towards a sweetheart, an ex-girlfriend, a mother, and God. The metaphors in the songs are also used to express feelings such as loneliness, regrets, hope, and despair.

Cat’s Eye; character development; Elaine Risley; Margaret Atwood
This research explores the character development of Elaine Risley, the main character of the novel Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood (2009), throughout her childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, and adulthood years. The objectives of this research are to explain how the character of Elaine Risley develops in Cat’s Eye and to examine the factors which affect Elaine Risley’s character development. This research employs the objective approach proposed by Abrams (1976) as its theoretical framework and the library research as its method of research. The results show that Elaine Risley always experiences development in her character throughout her life; she develops from a bullied little girl in her childhood, a mean but passionate girl in her adolescence, and an independent young woman in her early adulthood to finally become a woman who struggles to let go of her past in her adulthood. Elaine Risley’s character development is affected by several factors, namely, Toronto as her environment, her experiences with bullying, the men and women in the society around her, her own paintings, the cat’s eye marble, and the Virgin Mary.

Universitas Gadjah Mada
Racial issues; Influences; Fall of Othello
This study aims to describe the racial issues found in Othello and to analyze the influence of the issues on the characters in the play. In finding racial issues, the present writer analyses dialogues between the characters in the drama implicitly and explicitly.
The author uses Abrams‘ objective approach and also some references to classify the racial issues and along with the characters based on the types of racism such as individual racism, passive racism, active racism, and internalized racism. The data were obtained by observing the play without being influenced by materials outside of the text.
The result of this study indicates that there are racial issues in this play. The racial issues have a very significant effect on the characters‘ view, including Othello‘s, of the existence of black people. Othello becomes racist against himself and loses the confidence of being black, hence the cause of the fall of Othello.

Sentence Fragments in the Narration of the Novel "The Hunger Games"
Nurhusna, Farhani
Universitas Gadjah Mada
sentence fragments; grammar; dependent-clause fragments; phrase fragments; narration
The use of sentence fragments is generally discouraged in good English writing because they lack one or more essential components of a sentence, namely a subject and/or a predicate, and thus are grammatically unacceptable. However in fiction writing, the use of sentence fragments is not only quite common in dialogue, but in narration as well. The present study analyses sentence fragments in the narration of the first novel of the young-adult science-fiction trilogy The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins, to investigate the types of fragments employed in the novel and their classification based on syntactic structure in the form of dependent-clause fragments and phrase fragments. The sentence fragments were further analysed for their use based on the context of their preceding sentences. The use of sentence fragments in the novel basically serves the function of creating emphasis or stressing important points in the story.

idioms; translation; translation strategies
This study analyzes the idioms and its translation strategies used in novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. RThe rsearcher classifies the translation strategies by using accuracy analysis. The result of this research shows that there are three strategies used by the Indonesian translator. The first strategy is idiom to idiom, which means transferring idioms in English into idioms in Indonesian. This method is used when two idioms, in both English and Indonesian, contain the same form and meaning. Second method is paraphrase, which means transferring idioms in English directly into its real meaning in Indonesian. This strategy is the most frequently used considering the fact that it is very difficult to find idioms in Indonesian that has the same meaning and form with the idioms in English. The third method is literal translation. In some cases, idioms in English can be literally translated. This kind of case is specifically occurs when an idiom happens to be part of a dialogue or informal sentence.

The Doctor’s Dilemma is known as a tragic play which has become a success and has been reproduced several times. This play has moral values concealed within it. This study aims to find out the moral actions, the reason for Bernard Shaw’s skeptical perception towards physicians, and to learn the circumstances of medical treatment in the early 20th century by analyzing the preface, dialogues, and stage directions in the play. This study basically adopts a combination of mimetic and expressive approaches which regard The Doctor’s Dilemma as the expression of Shaw’s idea and portraits of medical and social life in early 20th century. The analysis is focused on the violation of medical ethics and social norms because they are the dominant in the play. The results of the analysis are the failure of the physician characters in the play to keep their oath as medical attendants because they violate five of eight general duties based on the medical ethic. Then, it is also found out that several characters do not obey the social norm, such as being dishonest, and doing some actions to pursue their personal benefits.

Jim Crow Laws in Langston Hughes’ “Breakfast in Virginia” and “Trouble with the Angels”

im Crow laws; segregation; “Breakfast in Virginia”; “Trouble with the Angels”
This graduating paper analyzes Jim Crow laws as reflected in Langston Hughes’ short stories “Breakfast in Virginia” and “Trouble with the Angels”. This study aims to identify the practice of Jim Crow laws as seen in “Breakfast in Virginia” and “Trouble with the Angels”. This graduating paper applies mimetic theory proposed by Abrams since it is the most suitable approach to be used to analyze the connection between the literary work and the reality. There are two types of data which are used in this paper. The primary data are the short stories entitled, “Breakfast in Virginia” and “Trouble with the Angels”. Meanwhile, the secondary data are the references that support the analysis and are taken from the internet browsing.
Based on the data analysis, this research concludes that segregation is the practice of Jim Crow laws in these two short stories. The segregations are clearly seen mostly in public places. In “Breakfast in Virginia” the segregations happen in the train, specifically in Jim Crow car and in the dining car in Virginia. Meanwhile, in “Trouble with the Angels” the segregations are clearly visible in the hotel and in the theater in Washington. In “Breakfast in Virginia” the segregations are faced by African American soldiers during World War II. Meanwhile, in “Trouble with the Angels” the segregations are experienced by African American actors and the other African American citizens of Washington. These two short stories show that Jim Crow laws made African Americans life getting worse, especially in public places. Both in “Breakfast in Virginia” and in “Trouble with the Angels”, African Americans cannot use the same public facilities as the whites. They can only use public facilities specially provided for the African Americans which have improper conditions. During the practice of Jim Crow laws, their rights are denied. This is proved by the segregations that do not only restrict African Americans from middle or low class status but also restrict those who have a higher status regardless their influential contribution toAmerica. This condition is painful for them.

Hayley Williams; Paramore; song-lyrics; expressive
This graduating paper attempts to examine Williams' writing about moving forward and growing up based on the six song-lyrics taken from the Paramore album after the leaving of its two founding members, guitarist Josh and drummer Zac Farro. These six song-lyrics present a theme of future and maturity despite the hardships that Williams experienced before the Farro brothers‟ leaving.
This graduating paper applies Abrams‟ expressive approach to study the author’s feelings through the song-lyrics written by Williams. To support the whole analysis, a library research is conducted, supported with articles, interviews, videos, magazines, e-magazines, the album itself, and reliable websites.
The result of the analysis shows that Williams deals with the Farro brothers’ leaving on Paramore in a more positive way. After all the anger, disappointment, and hardships, Williams proves herself to not let these negativities take over her life and how life is too short to be angry.

pragmatic failure, Asperger Syndrome, House Rules
Pragmatic failures are often discussed in the context of cross-cultural studies. However, pragmatic failures have also been evident in other circumstances. People who are diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, for example, also often experience pragmatic failures, even when they converse with others who come from the same geographical area and share the same culture. This paper examines pragmatic failures produced by Jacob, a character diagnosed with Asperger syndrome (AS) in Jodi Picoult’s novel House Rules. The data were excerpts taken from the novel that show Jacob’s failures to understand the other speakers. The data were classified into 12 categories of pragmatic failures: sarcasm, idioms, common phrases, metaphors, hyperbole, words with multiple meanings, the maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, maxim of manner, joke, and indirect speech acts. The results showed that the most frequent type of pragmatic failures that Jacob produces in the novel is the infringement of the maxim of relation. In other words, Jacob often produces irrelevant utterances.

Semantic Features of ‘Noodle’ and its Related Words
Ramadhani, Cahyo

semantic feature; componential analysis; noodle; noodle related words
The word „noodle‟ has different definitions in English dictionaries. The variety of definitions influences the variety of meaning, thus the variety of semantic features of the word. Furthermore, it influences whether a related word could be considered as „noodle‟. To identify the common semantic features of the word „noodle‟, the data are the word „noodle‟ and its definitions in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (AHDEL), Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary (CACD), Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary of English Language (FWSDEL), Merriam-Webster Dictionary (MWD), and Oxford Advanced Learner‟s Dictionary (OALD). To identify if the common semantic features of „noodle‟ are present in noodle-related words, 39 words having the sense “noodle” were collected from Dictionary of Food. The data were analyzed using componential analysis based on theLyons' statement that words and phrases are built upon sense-components. Therefore, the data are broken down into blocks of semantic features, and then marked + if the semantic feature is present, marked +/- if the semantic feature is unlikely present, and marked – if the semantic feature is not present. The result is that the word „noodle‟ in the dictionaries has the ᴍ.ғ. ғʟᴏᴜʀ, ᴍ.ᴡ. ᴇɢɢ, and ʀɪʙʙᴏɴ features in common, with the ʀɪʙʙᴏɴ feature present in all dictionaries, thus the most important semantic feature of „noodle‟. Regarding the 39 noodle-related words, 13 words meet the most important semantic feature of „noodle‟, but only 4 words meet all the common semantic features of „noodle‟, yet 11 words do not meet the common semantic features at all. In brief, the common semantic features of „noodle‟ are not the prerequisite for any word to mean “noodle”.

A Pragmatic Study of Request Head Acts and External Modifications as Seen in "Frozen"

speech act; requests; head act; external modification; context
This research attempts to investigate the requests in Frozen, an American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy-comedy film. The data comprise 76 requests collected from the subtitles of the movie, along with the context. Specifically, it aims to classify and analyze the requests‘ head acts and external modifications, and to find out the more dominant strategy appears in the movie. The classification of the head act was according to the theory of request strategies proposed by Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984): direct, conventionally indirect, and non-conventionally indirect. The classification of the external modification was according to the theory of external modification strategies proposed by Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper‘s classification (qtd. in Schauer, 92): preparator, grounder, disarmer, imposition minimizer, sweetener, and promise of reward. Based on the classification, it can be seen that direct strategies is the most preferred strategies in uttering requests with 50 (65.79%) occurrences and grounder is the most preferred strategies in modifying requests with 23 (67.65%) occurrences. The high frequency of direct strategy might be caused by the characters‘ intimacy in the storyline and grounder might be caused by the easiness of using grounder in modifying requests.

comparative study; folklore; animal tales; moral values; cultural values
United States is a nation that composite of many peoples and consists of various ethnic groups whose origin came from many different parts of the world. Their folklores enrich and contribute the American experience. Indonesia is also a nation that composite of many peoples and consists of various ethnic groups whose origin lives in Indonesian archipelago. Therefore this thesis carries out a comparative study of animal tales of Cherokee, one of Native American tribes and Sumbawa, an Indonesia tribe. The objectives of the study are to explain the similarities and the differences in delivering moral values between the three pairs of tales, to explore the cultural values in Cherokee and Sumbawa animal folktales, and to elucidate the representation of the characters in those animal folktales.
This research employs multidisciplinary theories under American Studies, they are “structuralism” by Alan Dundes and “micro to macro” by Leo Marx. By conducting qualitative research, it is acknowledged that the cultural product (microcosm) that is folktales in form of animal tales is a reflection of the empirical life (realities) of the society that gives birth to it (microcosm). These three pairs of animal tales reflected the realities of Cherokee and Sumbawa society.
The animal tales of Cherokee are How The Terrapin Beat The Rabbit, The Rabbit and The Possum Seek A Wife, and How The Deer Got His Horns. While the animal tales of Sumbawa are: The Tales of The Monkey, The Turtle and The Snail, The Tales of The Monkey And The Flamingo and The Cocky Monkey (Sruduk Team). Animal tales in both tribes are using animal characters to represent human being, their characteristics, moral and cultural values. Their main characters in most of animal tales are different; Cherokee is represented by the character of Rabbit, whereas Sumbawa is represented by the character of Monkey. The animal tales of Cherokee and Sumbawa is very much alive and imbued with power to create identity and community.

This research aims at investigating the grammatical errors that occur in the English version of an official Indonesiawebsite “Portal Nasional Republik Indonesia”. In particular, it attempts to classify the errors based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). The data used in this research are taken from four articles on the website,: Indonesia at a Glance, President & Vice, United Indonesia Cabinet, and Palaces. The result shows errors in sixteen linguistic categories in the Surface Strategy Taxonomy which are divided into: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. From all the four parts, the most frequent errors are in the part of misformation (188 errors; 78.96%) followed by omission (39 errors; 16.38%), addition (8 errors; 3.36%), and misordering (2 errors; 0.84%). From the linguistic categories, the three most frequent errors are the “spelling” with 74 errors (31.08%), then “parallelism” with 62 errors (26.04%), and “determiner” with 21 errors (8.82%). The research concludes that the author needs to develop his accuracy in using english in order to keep the reputation of the website.

Indirect Refusal Strategies in Two American and Three British Movies

indirect refusal; mitigated refusal strategy; reason/explanation strategy; American andBritish movies
This research focuses on identification and classification of indirect refusal strategies found in two American movies (RV (2006), We’re the Millers (2014)) and three British movies (Chalet Girl (2011), Cuban Fury (2014), and Hot Fuzz (2007)). In particular, it aims to show the different strategy between the refusals of American and British movies. The data were analysed by Félix-Brasdefer taxonomy of indirect refusal strategies (2008, 74-79). The data used in this research were taken through an observation from the subtitle of these five movies. The results of the research show that out of the 92 refusal utterances, 50 were found in the American movies and 42 from the British movies. Based on the findings, the most frequently used strategy from the American movies is Strategy 1: Mitigated Refusal. This strategy was used 11 times (11.96%). In the British movies, the most common strategy is Strategy 2: Reason/Explanation which used 17 times (18.48%). These results suggest that the American and the British have their own ways in delivering refusal. To minimize the negative effects of being refused the American tends to hedge the refusal for making the utterances sounds more polite. Meanwhile, the British tends to explain why they cannot fulfil the interlocutor’s demand.

Universitas Gadjah Mada
cartoon movies; utterances; apology strategy; familiarity; pragmatics
This article discusses apology expressions in four cartoon movies. The goals are to describe the strategy of apology and explain how the utterances of apologies are affected by familiarity. The research collected the data from dialogues that consist of apology in Monsters University, Frozen, Mulan, and Mulan II. In analyzing the data, it followed five steps: (1) finding and understanding the context of the utterances of the apology expression in order to understand the speaker’s utterances; (2) identifying and describing the utterances based on the category of apology strategy; (3) analyzing the data based on the theory of apology strategy by Olshtain & Cohen; (4) analyzing the use of apology influence by familiarity; (5) making conclusion based on the results of the data analysis.
The results show that two apology strategies, an expression of an apology and an explanation or account of the situation, dominate the ranks. They are then followed by an acknowledgment of responsibility, and an offer of repair, and a promise of forbearance. Meanwhile, the relation between the speakers also influence the use of apology.

The Case of the Sidekick: The Roles of Dr. John Watson in Sherlock Holmes Canon by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Zahroh, Adiba Qonita
Universitas Gadjah Mada
Sidekick; dr. John Watson; Sherlock Holmes; Conan Doyle
sidekick in literature is perceived as a supporter of a hero or a man-behind a hero. However, it does not always work that way. In Sherlock Holmes canon, there can be found a well-known dr. John Watson who acts differently as a sidekick for Sherlock Holmes as a protagonist of the stories. Throughout the canon, Watson does not merely act as a supporter or a man-behind who just follows Holmes’s moves. In many occasions, Watson contributes varied significant things in supporting Holmes through some roles he possesses. Moreover, what Watson contributes is found out to be influential to Holmes. Therefore, it can be seen that being a sidekick can do other things apart from following the hero all the time.
Based on the facts about Watson’s contributions, this paper is conducted to examine the roles dr. John Watson as a sidekick. The data used in the research are 56 short stories and four novels of Sherlock Holmes bundled together in Sherlock Holmes canon. The method of collecting the data is executed through intensive reading, mapping out the roles of dr. John Watson found during the reading process, and analysing the collected data.
Since the focus of this paper is about dr. John Watson’s roles and their influences towards Sherlock Holmes, objective theory is chosen to be employed. Related to the theory, this paper offers the explanation of intrinsic elements with focus on character element and sidekick character.

Racial Discrimination in Kathryn Stockett’s "The Help"

racial discrimination; black maids; 1960s; distrust; insecurity
Kathryn Stockett’s novel titled The Help is a narrative novel about the lives of African-American maids named Aibileen and Minny who received discriminative treatments from the white masters around 1960s in Southern United States. This research aims to answer two objectives, which are; to explore the racial discrimination acts toward the black maids and to investigate the effects of racial discrimination to the black maids’ lives. Since the present writer analyzes the discriminative treatments from the white masters toward the black maids based on the real social condition in the era of 1960s in Southern United States, Sociological Approach is considered as the most suitable approach to be applied. In addition, Fred L. Pincus’s theory about type of discrimination is also used in analyzing the discrimination acts. The result of this research paper shows there are two types of discrimination as seen in the novel; individual discrimination and institutional discrimination, and those discrimination acts reflect the social condition of 1960s in Southern United States. Meanwhile, racial discrimination affects the lives of the black maids in term of distrust toward white people and insecurity.

Freudian Psychoanalysis; Psychocritique; Jewish Orthodoxy
The research discusses the Jewish images found in The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and its interpretation. It aims to prove that the utilization of Jewish images within the novella shows the author’s underlying critique towards Jewish Orthodoxy’ ways of thinking, particularly the way they regard the Holy Scripture. The data used in the research are taken from Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, in the form of words containing plot structure, characters and characterizations (including dialogue and actions), metaphors, symbols, and allusions, which represents a certain Jewish value within Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. The data are then analysed with Freudian Psychoanalysis, supported by external data such as the background of the author and information about Orthodox Judaism. The result of the research concluded that, in The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka demonstrates that in front of the unquestioned and oblivious masses of the divine law human is hopeless; just like Gregor who ends up dying an unjustified death.

blends; prosodic morphological approach; structural formations; syllabic constituents; size of blends
This research focuses on the blends used in the brands of snacks and beverages which are found in supermarkets around Yogyakarta. More specifically, it attempts to identify and classify blend into four structural formations using prosodic morphology approach. The syllabic constituents of each source word and the number of syllables of the blends are also analyzed in this research. The findings of this research show that coining each beginning of two words is the structural formations of blends mostly used in the data collected (9 blends). It is followed by coining beginning and ending elements of word (7 blends), coining two words that have common sequence sounds (6 blends), and ended by coining two words that have multiple sounds (3 blends). The structural formations that are mostly relevant to the size of blends based on the number of syllables of the second source wordsis AD formation (83.33%). It shows that the structures of blends without overlapping on the source words are more relevant to the theory of size of the blends than the structures of blends with overlapping.

Museums play an important role to an area, especially in Yogyakarta, not only as a place where they keep historical, scientific, or artistic artefacts, but also as a tourism destination. Tourists from inside as well as outside of Indonesia come to these museums to educate themselves about Yogyakarta, which is famous as a “student city” and “cultural city”. However, visitors from overseas may get confused with the translation provided since many translation errors are found in the captions of museum displays. In this paper, I am going to identify, analyze and discuss the meaning based translation errors in Museum Sonobudoyo and Museum Kraton Kasultanan Ngayogyakarto Hadiningrat, and classify them to find out what most common mistakes the translators make are. After identifying and classifying the errors, the paper will move onto how to tackle the cultural-specific concept errors using note, a translation procedure by Newmark (1988) and translation steps by Larson (1998) for the non-cultural-specific concept problems.

Machiavellian principles; dynamic structuralism; Iago; power; character
This research is aimed to identify Machiavellian principles applied in Iago’s traits. Dynamic structuralism proposed by Mukarovsky is applied as its theoretical approach, so the discussion of this research evolves around the intrinsic elements of the play as well as the historical background of Machiavelli and the principles. By conducting a library research as the method, it is revealed that Machiavelli has his own idea to define power. According to Machiavelli, achieving power has to deal with virtù as a force. This is considered as the highlight of Machiavellian principles in this research.
Therefore, the interaction between Iago and other characters are analyzed to see the application of Machiavellian principles in Iago’s traits. Iago’s plan is highlighted and linked to Machiavellian principles, saying that it is acceptable for someone to be harmful and selfish as the ways to achieve power. As the result, this research concludes that Iago has various personalities: as a backstabber, a trickster, and a master of exploiting other people’s mind. These personalities are aligned with Machiavellian principles. Iago manages a mischievous plan to destroy other people’s lives. His atrocious behavior represents the idea of a Machiavellian virtùe, described as a part of Machiavellian principles.

The data comprise 73 promises collected from the subtitles of the movies Dear John, For Love of the Game, Going the Distance, Like Crazy, and The Notebook. Specifically, it aims to identify and categorize the promises, and to find out the more dominant type appears in those movies. The classification of the promises was according to Searle’s four felicity conditions: proportional condition, preparatory condition, sincerity condition, and essential condition. Based on the classification, it can be seen that all of the promises have fulfilled the four felicity conditions and the highest frequency of promises occurred in the movie Like Crazy (24.66%). The result also shows that 65 promises (89.04%) are categorized as implicit performatives and it appears as the more dominant type of promises in the data. The high number of implicit performatives indicates that the speakers might want to show their intention to do something in a casual way.
